what is graphic design?

an exploration of the process behind graphic design www.beckyshannon.com
Video Rating: 4 / 5

Graphic designers combine artistic ability with technical knowledge to create designs used in print and electronic media. First-year courses introduce students to graphics software, typography and design fundamentals that are essential for success in the graphics media industry. Second-year students apply these skills in a unique instructional setting that blends marketing and advertising concepts with art production. Design ability is strengthened through instruction in printing, pre-press, and finishing operations. A fourth semester course prepares students for employment through career and portfolio development. The graphic designer’s employment opportunities are varied and competitive. Designers find employment as graphic designers and graphic artists with advertising agencies, printing companies, corporate art departments and publishers; as online web site developers; in public relations firms; and as free-lance designers. Earning potential increases with extended and varied work experience. Lean more at www.westerntc.edu

Great video; but I think the message focused more on the science of graphic design and not enough on the creative art that graphic design is to me (and others)–which is partially ironic because the video itself is very creative. To me, graphic design is a marriage of creative art and technology to communicate ideas effectively.

  8. emokidx555 Says:

#LOL What a ridiculous way of explaining what Graphic Design is. I’m a Graphic Designer and I co-own a Graphic Design Agency, and I literally fell asleep to this.

@vonspawn youre forgetting the BIGGEST thing we copy ideas from…..Stumble.com
    lol

  10. LibraMediaLtd Says:

Yeah, I get where you are going but what about instant inspiration and out of the box conjuring of imagination straight off? Good work fella but at the heart of design is art, don’t concentrate on the science too much or things will get stale… Mick Jagger can’t sing but the stones are ace and always will be…get me? Don’t take this as disrespect, just my point of view…

  28. anarchy1090 Says:

    @pyramidhead138 i dont no!

  29. docrock66 Says:

@RadCelt Listen, I agree with you. But there is big BUT. Graphic Design schools are just not really teaching kids what is asked from them in the real world. And in today’s crumbling market they literally want a PRODIGY out of Junior designer. They want them to know; marketing, design, web, mechanicals, sales, pr, supervising, and even I’ve seen at some posts online they want designers to do HR stuff too. It’s just not what creative minds are meant to do. Everyone has their own pace.

  30. RadCelt Says:

@docrock66: LOL… Let’s get real – No one will hand it to you! What you’re saying is enrollment should be restricted. The fact is – it’s a glamor industry – where one learns has nothing whatever to do with success or lack thereof – (what matters is knowledge, skills and ability – and you can get that from many places – traditional and elsewhere) – Want to be a successful designer? Learn Biz skills too – written/verbal skills, sales & marketing (you obviously need a good portfolio as well)

  31. brbrkl Says:

@docrock66 i understand ur point. In italy we have limited number of students that can enter design universities. However i think that if u are among the best designers and u r creative, you’ll find a job, no matter how many competitors are out there.

  32. AtumGraphics Says:

@aliniaz It does. Even if you’re having trouble trying to make a career out of it, you can still enjoy it.

  33. bonzobilly Says:

does anyone know what market pens they were using?

  34. skyhacker6 Says:

Yea, good, but the price ? how many per year ? ……….. no answer, that right, it’s too expansive for the majority of student ! like me for exemple !

  35. EZA757 Says:

@docrock66, yeah I understand where your coming from. It depends on the agency that’s hiring you. Many require a certain level of discipline as far you being able to design something within the interest of a company, rather than a personal infatuation. If that were the case, it would fall under Fine Arts, towards which self-expression is more robust. There is a difference between a person who draws Anime and one that does Business Advertising.

  36. docrock66 Says:

@EZA757 Thanks for your response, you’ve read my mind. I feel that some people just choose to be designers, because they assume it might be easy or they just need to declare their major because they have been without one for so many years. There should be strict tests, and screenings before entering design school in my opinion. That way students can compete with one another, and not just pull together poor and weak work at the end of the weekend.

  37. EZA757 Says:

@docrock66, I’m a graphic designer. I’m working on my BA at the moment. Yet, before I even came into my major, I was self-taught at Graphic Design. I was using Ai CS2 back in high school as well as Ph and AiD. My first year of design class, I already became familiar with all the programs while others had no clue on how to work an anchor point. So, it some sense, there is an advantage. Only way you’ll make money, is if you beat out the competition. Jobs are like that period.

  38. pyramidhead138 Says:

of all the things i COULD be doing with my life, it always makes me wonder; “Why am I still doing security?”

  39. reemreem1550 Says:

    @docrock66

    not only in America

  40. docrock66 Says:

The problem with that is that there is way too many programs in America that teach graphic designs. Saddest part is that there ain’t as many design jobs in comparison to the design programs. Graduate students don’t only compete with the people that have degrees, but they also compete with the people who are self thought designers. There should be guidelines in this country on how many students per year can enter a design programs.

  41. iluvmybangs Says:

i’m in the yearbook staff and we have to do a lot of graphic design stuff and yea you do have to meet tons of deadlines!! plus you have to learn to accept criticism.

  42. lastinlineband1 Says:

Thank you for that message about graphic design. That really sets the rules.

  43. lastinlineband1 Says:

Who wants a graphic design job? It’s cut throat and lousy pay. If you partner up with somebody they’ll steal your clients and you come to work to an empty studio. “Here’s $5! Make me a logo!”

  44. thedancingmonkey1234 Says:

Oh, I’m a graphic designer degree and I’m an artist too, so the design is an art because the art is creative and inspirational!! I love this video, good job!
